The ‘Hook’ of a pop song is what usually lingers in our mind long after the song has ended. It’s also what can make a song a hit on the charts. In the song “Good Time”, a collaboration of Carly Rae Jepsen, Owl City’s Adam Young and writers Matt Thiessen and Brian Lee. it’s the hook that leaves you singing the song over and over. Jepsen is known for her hit song “Call me maybe”, a pop song that is known for sticking in your mind for hours. The song “Good Time” was released in late June of this year, but artist Allyson Burnett says it’s a copyright infringement of her song “AH it’s a love song” written in 2009. Filed in California Federal Court, her legal complaint she says “Many consumers may incorrectly assume that Burnett copied her own Original Motif from the Infringing Songwriters due to the widespread popularity and publication of ‘Good Time’. Burnett’s reputation as an independent artist will be significantly damaged by such incorrect assumptions.” Burnett’s song “AH, It’s a love song” has a similar hook and has claimed she has suffered “Emotional and psychological damage” and that fans have accused her of copying the “Good Time” hit single. Burnett is seeking a “Constructive Trust” to be established in order to collect royalties from the song. Also named in the suit are Universal Music Group, Songs Music Publishing and Schoolboy Records. Carly Rae and Adam Young have not yet commented on the suit. Jepson’s manager believes Burnett will drop the charges due to the fact Jepson is not one of the songwriters and is not receiving benefits from writing it.
